How MEMODAILLE® Was Born: the Story Behind Euroscope’s Souvenir Medal

MEMODAILLE® is Euroscope’s registered trademark for high-quality souvenir medals. The name brings together memory and medal, reflecting the idea of taking home a small keepsake of a special place or memorable experience.

A New Souvenir Needs a Name

Sometimes a brand begins with a practical question.

In 2014, Euroscope expanded its range with a round souvenir medal. Alongside its established pressed coins, it offered visitors another way to take home a lasting reminder of a viewpoint, museum, landmark or shared day out.

For site partners, the medal complemented the existing souvenir range and opened up new possibilities for creating designs specific to their locations. But first, one question needed answering: what should the new product be called?

Why a Distinctive Name Mattered

A souvenir medal connects a place and its imagery with a personal memory. Its name therefore needed to do more than describe the product: it had to be memorable and clearly associated with Euroscope.

Partners in France also recommended choosing a distinctive name for the new medal. Souvenir medals sold through vending machines had already been established there for many years. A unique name would help identify the new product and avoid confusion.

The Idea Came from Within the Team

The suggestion came from Alexandra Metzen, a longstanding member of the Euroscope team. Her spontaneous idea: MEMODAILLE®.

The name combines two concepts: “Memo” evokes memory, while “Medaille”, the German word for medal, describes the souvenir itself. Together, they capture why people choose such a keepsake: they want to take something of their visit home with them.

A spontaneous idea became a distinctive, recognisable name.

A Design, a Place, a Personal Memory

MEMODAILLE® has been protected as a registered trademark since 2015. It represents souvenir medals that connect a place’s distinctive imagery with personal experiences.

For visitors, the value often lies in the memory: a family outing, a spectacular view or an encounter with a favourite animal. For site partners, the medal offers a way to depict landmarks, animals or other local features on a small keepsake.

The same design can therefore hold very different meanings for different people, depending on what they associate with their visit.

A Name That Still Fits Today

The story of MEMODAILLE® shows how closely product design and the visitor experience are connected. A well-chosen design makes the place recognisable; the personal memory gives the souvenir its meaning.

What began as a name suggested within the team still expresses the idea behind the product today: a small keepsake that recalls a special moment long after the visit.
